    Craig’s sight-saving journey to Alice Springs


    This video shows the journey of a young Aboriginal boy who was born with cataracts making a trip with his family from Lake Nash, a remote community in the Northern Territory, to Alice Springs, to receive sight-saving surgery.


    Your eyes & diabetes


    An information sheet was developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with diabetes. It provides information about: how the eye works; how diabetes affects the eyes; what to do for your eyes; signs and symptoms; eye problems including retinopathy, cataract and glaucoma.


    Yalata telemedicine project


    This video shows how the Digital Retinography System (DRS) camera has been implemented for the screening of diabetic retinopathy and other eye conditions, for Indigenous people in Yalata Aboriginal Community and surrounding areas in South Australia (SA).


     


    PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS


    Marrin Weejali Aboriginal eye clinic


    - based in Blackett, NSW, the clinic provides eye testing and glasses for Aboriginal people, their partners and children.


    Indigenous tele-eye care trial


    - an initiative to demonstrate the use of satellite supported broadband network, to provide remote delivery of specialist eye care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders living in three rural and remote areas across WA and Qld.


    Yalata telemedicine project


    - aim of improving eye health of local Indigenous people, particularly those with diabetes by the installation of a Digital Retinography System (DRS) at Yalata Aboriginal community in South Australia in 2012.


    Katungal eye health program


    - provides vision testing and diabetes checks at the Narooma and Bega clinics in NSW.


    Statewide eyesight preschooler screening (StEPS)


    - is a free vision screening program available for all four year old children in NSW.


    Indigenous Australia program


    - works in partnership with ACCHOs and the peak bodies that represent them in the NT, Qld, NSW, WA and SA, to ensure efforts are directed towards health issues and activities that are important and will impact on the health of Indigenous people.
